Indications show three way fight for final Foyle seat

Whilst no official figures have yet been released at the Foyle Assembly election count it appears that there may be a three-way '˜dog fight' for the final seat.

The ‘Journal’ understands that it is possible that Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness may well top the poll. Sources indicate that he has already accumulated just over 5,000 votes-the expected quota is likely to be close to 5,700. The ‘Journal’ also undersatnds that SDLP leader Colum Eastwood is also around the 5,000 mark. Based on this,at this stage, it is possible that no candidate will reach the quota on the first count.

It is also believed that the People Before Profit Alliance Candidate Eamonn McCann has polled just over 4,000 votes, Independent Anne McCloskey approximately 3,400 votes and the other Independent candidate Kathleen Bradley roughly 1,000 votes.

The unionist vote has appeared to have remained in its bulk with the DUP candidate Gary Middleton who looks certain to retain the seat.

So far the projections are that the SDLP will retain two seats, Sinn Fein will hold two, the DUP will hold their seat and the last seat will be a scrap bewteen Eamonn McCann, and the remaining Sinn Fein and SDLP candidates.
