Irish government providing assistance to Sr Clare's family

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs have confirmed they are providing consular assistance to the family of a Derry nun killed in the Ecuadorian Earthquake tragedy.

Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan expressed his condolences to the family of the Derry nun who died in the Ecuadorian Earthquake.

Confirming his department’s role in trying to ensure the return of Sister Clare’s remains, the Minister said: “The tributes paid to Sister Crockett since the weekend are a testament to the difference she made to the lives of the community she served.

“My Department is providing consular assistance to her family.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Ireland, I also want to extend our sincere condolences to the people of Ecuador on the tragic and heavy loss of life from Saturday’s devastating earthquake.

“Our thoughts are with the families of all those who were killed as they mourn their loss.

“Officials from my Department continue to liaise closely with the authorities in Ecuador in the aftermath of the earthquake.”

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has also expressed his condolences to the family.

The Sinn Fein representative said: “I want to send my sympathy to the family and friends of Sr Clare Theresa Crockett who tragically died in an earthquake in Ecuador on Saturday.

“Sr. Clare devoted her life to children and young people and died selflessly helping those in need in Ecuador.

“Her death has shocked and saddened the entire community in Derry and further afield.

“My thoughts are with all of Sr. Clare’s family, friends and colleagues at this tragic time.”
