The Irish Republican Socialist Party will be holding its annual commemoration honouring local INLA Volunteer Neil McMonagle this Sunday in Leafair Park.
Neil McMonagle was an INLA volunteer from the area who was killed during an undercover SAS operation in Leafair Park on February 2, 1983.
The event this year will include the unveiling of a new mural on a gable wall at the entrance to Leafair Park. This mural was designed and commissioned by the local community. This will then be followed by an IRSP organised wreath laying ceremony at the Neil McMonagle memorial in Leafair Park.
Those attending are asked to assemble at 12.30pm on Sunday at the entrance to Leafair Park for the mural unveiling. Attendees will then walk the short distance to the memorial where the wreath laying ceremony will take place.
An IRSP spokesman said: “Neil McMonagle was held in high regard by the people of Shantallow and we invite Neil’s family, friends and former comrades to this event in order to keep Neil’s political ideals and memory alive within this vibrant and strong community.”
