Derry footballer James McClean has taken to Twitter to have his say on moves to have the city’s name officially recognised as Derry.

Unionists reacted with anger and disappointment to a Sinn Féin call for Derry City and Strabane District Council to write to DoE Minister Mark H Durkan, seeking clarification on changing the city’s name to Derry.

A previous Sinn Féin attempt under the old Derry City Council to ask the Queen to change the name was voted down by unionists and the SDLP in 2010.

The West Brom winger tweeted on Friday: “Training finished, gym finished, Derry’s officially getting its rightful name back, have a great day folks.”
