Jessica performs stunning tribute to friend Ryan McBride

A good friend of late Derry City FC captain Ryan McBride has performed a stunning musical tribute to him.

Jessica Doherty dedicated her version of the Irish classic, The Parting Glass, to the late footballer as she finished her set at the latest Cottage Sessions in the city last week.

Introducing the song, Jessica said: “The reason I am playing this tonight is because I understand, and I think everybody knows, that this is one of the saddest weeks Derry has seen recently.

“It has been a pretty sad week for me to lose a good friend and colleague in Ryan McBride and also people suffering the loss of Martin McGuinness.”

Jessica added: “I’m going to play it for anybody that is going through stages of grief and hopefully this song brings you comfort in any way it possibly can.”

Ryan McBride passed away suddenly at his home in the Brandywell on Sunday March 19.

His death sent shockwaves through the city, and came in the same week that former Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness passed away.

The funerals of both Both Ryan McBride and Martin McGuinness took place just hours apart at the Long Tower Church on Thursday, March 23.

As well as his role with Derry City, Ryan also well known locally as a barman at Peadar O’Donnel’s Bar on Waterloo Street in the city centre.

Thousands of people have already watched, liked and shared Jessica’s tribute via Facebook.

The live music Cottage Sessions are held in the Cottage in Derry’s Craft Village.
