Sinn Féin councillor Michael Cooper has welcomed a reduction in anti-community incidents in the Joseph Place areas of the Bogside.
He was speaking after a number of groups got together in an effort to tackle the problems faced by residents.
“In the past there had been attempts to resolve the issue by the addition of extra safety fencing in the area and other initiatives. For various reasons this did not resolve the issue to the satisfaction of local residents, however, in the last year however the residents have engaged with Community Restorative Justice, Sinn Féin, the Triax Neighbourhood Management Team and other statutory agencies to deal with the problem.”
Colr. Cooper also added that more work is needed in the area. “Unfortunately it has not eradicated the problem but it has resulted in a dramatic reduction in the number of young people gathering in the area which has seen a big improvement in the quality of life for local residents.
“I will continue to work with the residents and local agencies and groups to ensure that this continues to be the case in the future. If any resident has any issue they should feel free to contact me.”
