It’s official. The vast majority of Derry Journal readers would recommend the city as a tourist destination.

For the last seven days, the Derry Journal online ran a poll asking them would they recommend Derry as a place for tourists to visit.

Seventy-seven per cent of people who took part in the poll said they would and agreed that Derry might be a small city but when it comes to tourism it holds its own.

However, the remaining 23 per cent said they wouldn’t recommend the city to tourists as they believe it to be so far behind other European cities.

Local tour operator, Michael Cooper from Blue Badge Tours, said Derry’s year of culture in 2013 was a watershed moment for the city.

“The City of Culture and Derry’s rating with the Lonely Planet was a watershed moment for the city. From my point of view, 2013 was our biggest and most successful

“Numbers up 35% this year and people are now aware of what we have here. We push the experience in Derry and there’s big grow and demand for story of the Troubles and the Peace Process. Our reputation is on peoples’ radars.

“It’s up to us to keep the profile of the city going forward,” said Michael.
