Well known for his extensive charity work, local bodybuilder Liam Stewart is now throwing his weight behind Slide On.

There are a number of reasons he has chosen to take part but first and foremost is a woman he calls his ‘soul mate’.

Speaking to the ‘Journal’ he explained, “I lost a very close friend to cancer almost three years ago. We weren’t in a relationship but she was my soul mate. I am heartbroken now she is gone.

“We just clicked and I was devastated to learn initially that she had lung cancer. Then six months later she went for some tests and she was told she also had a brain tumour.

“Never once did she complain, and she was so independent. She was inspirational to me and I miss her every day. I have a degree in psychotherapy and no-one has taught me more about life than her.”

Liam now has a tattoo on his chest in memory of his ‘soul mate’.

This is not Liam’s only connection to the charity. “I support a number of local charities, but my cousin Sharon works with Cancer Research UK and through her I know about the work they do. The research helps so many people. Hopefully in the future their work will ensure no-one has to dread a cancer diagnosis.”

In the meantime, Liam is urging the close bodybuilding community in Derry to get behind the event.

“The people in the bodybuilding community always get out to support me in my charity efforts - so I have no doubt there will be a few taking part in Slide On, as well as sponsoring me!”

Liam also has a number of forms at his gym, ‘Stewartys Gym’ in Springtown for anyone who wants to register to take part in Slide On.

Local fundraising manager Sharon Arbuckle said, “Slide On is next weekend and we are looking forward to a fun event that raises funds for Cancer Research UK. There is still time to register and book your place on the slide, which is taking place on one day only this year.” You can register online to or visit the information booth which will be in the Richmond Centre tomorrow, Saturday 29th August from 11am to 4.00pm.

Slide On is proudly sponsored by H&A Mechanical.
