Buncrana mass goers got the shock of their lives on Tuesday evening.
Those attending Mass at Cockhill prayed harder than they were perhaps expecting to, after the chapel was hit by lightning bolts.
One lady, a local sacristan had a lucky escape as she was very close to the strike which resulted in her suffering a temporary loss of hearing.
Father Rafal Janusewski CC said: “There was a big noise and the thunder bolt was amazing. We heard the storm; suddenly a flash of lightningshot into the church. The speaker system was destroyed and there was an explosion in the sacristy. The sacristan was a little deaf afterwards but she is a very brave woman.”
Follwing the strike Fr. Janusewski appealed for calm before concluding Mass under candlelight.
Hundreds, if not thousands, of Euro in damage was caused and the repair work was continuing in ernest yesterday.
The lightning crashed in on the congregation after the electrical storm struck the roof causing at least one stain glass window to smash, the ESB fusebox to explode and shorted all electrics including the lighting and sound systems.
Father Janusewski was celebrating the daily 7.30pm Mass in Cockhill when the sacristy was struck and lightening travelled down cables belonging to the alarm system. The lights on the tower of the chapel were also damaged as was the heating system.
The sacristan has since made a full recovery.
