Dean Doherty suffered his injuries on Sunday afternoon while at a motocross track in Bellarena, outside Limavady.

Dean’s father, Bernard, said the family are in shock at what happened.

“I got a call to say that Dean had come off the bike and was badly injured,” said Bernard. “It’s a terrible shock, the last thing you want to hear. He has been through surgery and we don’t know what the outcome will be. We just have to wait.”

Aidan, who stayed by his brother’s side until they arrived at the hospital, said: “It’s very worrying. You don’t want to see that happen to your twin brother, the closest person to you, but he’ll pull through. There is hope and he’s determined.”

Aidan praised the ambulance and Coastguard staff who he said “did everything they could” for his brother.

The family have also expressed heartfelt thanks to everyone who has called with them in the last day with messages of support.
