Local parents can avail of an opportunity to build on their current parenting skills thanks to a new Strengthening Families Programme based in the city. The programme is an internationally acclaimed 14 week skills based programme working with families with teenagers aged 12 to 16 years.
The aim of the programme is to help parents build on their current parenting strengths by improving family relationships, developing parenting and communication skills and helping teenagers increase their social and life skills.
The Strengthening Families Programme pilot is delivered by a team of qualified facilitators who come together from a mix of backgrounds across the statutory and voluntary sectors within the Western Health & Social Care Trust area. Their work is coordinated locally by Derry Healthy Cities.
The programme has just launched the start of its 2nd phase and are currently working with a number of families. Leona Scott, Co-ordinator for Strengthening Families Programme, said: ‘We are very privileged to be involved in this unique programme. Everyone involved in the programme to date including families and facilitators have embarked on a journey. The families who have already completed the pilot programme have reflected on how they had developed in confidence and built good communication skills and now are building and working together to strengthen their family units. We are really looking forward to the roll out of our second programme and our facilitators can’t wait to meet the families.”
