Two Derry men have been honoured in this year’s New Year’s Honours List, issued by the Queen.
Don McClay, President of the Boy’s Brigade in Londonderry, and Brendan Wilkinson of Pennyburn Youth Club on Buncrana Road were both honoured for their services to the young people of the city with MBEs (Members of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire).
Speaking on Friday, Mr. Wilkinson said the honour had rendered him speechless.
“I really can’t believe it, because I never expect anything out of life so I’m never disappointed.
“To get something like this, it’s very hard to put into words.
“I’m very humbled that people would think I was worthy of being put forward for such an award.”
The men are among 54 people from across the North to be honoured in the annual list.
Other recipients of the MBE include golfer Graeme McDowell, who this year won the US Open title.
Nine-hundred-and-ninety-eight people in total received titles in the New Year’s Honours list - the majority of whom were recognised for their work within their local communities.
