Máiréad Carlin in tears over Celtic Woman GRAMMY nomination

Derry vocalist Máiréad Carlin has been nominated for a prestigious GRAMMY award as part of the all-female international music phenomenon Celtic Woman.

Announcing the news the Culmore Road woman tweeted: “In tears as we hear this news - we have been nominated for a GRAMMY!!”

Máiréad and her bandmates received the nomination from the Recording Academy in the Best World Music Album category for their latest record, ‘Destiny’, which was released in the United States on Manhattan Records.

The Derry woman is in prestigious company and will be up against Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Anoushka Shankar and Yo-Yo Man and The Silk Road Ensemble in the category at the 59th annual GRAMMY awards at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles in February.

Gweedore singer-songwriter Enya has also received a nomination for Best New Age Album for her record ‘Dark Sky Island.’

The local women are in good company.
