Malin Head had sunniest day in October

At the beginning of the each month, the National Meterological Service publish a weather report from the month previously.

In October’s report, it states that the month was “quite settled” across the country with the percentages of rainfall values nearly all below their long-term average. Most stations across the country reported less than half the normal rainfall for October, with the percentage values reports in parts of the Northwest, West and Midlands “a third of normal.”

As well as reporting the most sunshine in a day on October 2nd, with 9.7 hours, the Malin Head Weather Station also recorded the lowest number of dull days over the entire month.

There were just four dull days recorded, compared to the highest of 11 at Knock and Shannon Airports.

Malin Head regularly records the highest wind speeds and October was no exception, Although, Met Eireann said that due to the predominance of high pressure conditions, the month’s mean wind speeds were generally low.

The highest monthly wind speed was recorded at Malin Head at 13.7 knots. The station also recorded the joint highest gust at 46 knots or 85km/h, along with Sherkin Island on the 16th of the month.

Meanwhile, as November begins, the forecast suggests that temperatures will be dropping slightly over the next few days.

Lowest temperatures will be 2-6 degrees tonight, Friday, with frost in places. It will stay cold well into next week with further frosts and perhaps the odd wintry shower this Sunday into Monday.
