Ryan Charles Doherty, from College View Apartments, is alleged to have committed the offences on May 26, 2013 on the Foyle Bridge. Doherty is also charged with driving without a licence.

Doherty was brought before the court after the police exercised a bench warrant for his arrest at the weekend.

The court heard that the alleged incident took place at a routine checkpoint on the Foyle Bridge.

A police constable told the court that after stopping a grey Audi A4 the driver of the car started to “physically shake”.

Police asked the driver to put the car into a nearby lay by but according to the constable the car drove off in the direction of Madam’s Bank Road.

The constable told the court as the police gave chase, the car ran a red light and escaped, via Lenamore Road, across the border into the Republic of Ireland.

A deflation device was used by police to try and stop the car during which time two car tyres burst.

The constable explained to Deputy District Judge, Peter Prenter, that the police objected to Doherty’s bail application on the grounds that he might commit a criminal offence and that he posed a flight risk.

The court was told that Doherty suffers from epilepsy and a defence solicitor asked Judge Prenter to take this into consideration when making his decision.

Judge Prenter refused to grant Doherty bail on the grounds that there is a risk he might re-offend and that he poses a flight risk.

Doherty is due to appear before the court again via video link on September 1.
