A man has been rescued by Foyle Search and Rescue after falling into the river at the Peace Bridge this afternoon.
In dramatic scenes in the city centre, three local man had tried to reach the man, who was described by police as being in distress.
The incident happened shortly after 2pm today (Friday).
Police said they received a report from a member of the public that a man was in distress at the Peace Bridge.
PSNI Inspector Audrey Irvine said that three local men went to his assistance, but the man fell into the river.
He added that with the aid of a life belt, the man was kept afloat until a Foyle Search and Rescue crew was able to get him onto a boat.
The man has now been taken by ambulance from the Foyle Search & Rescue jetty to hospital.
