A man has been shot in Derry.

Police say the shooting was carried out by two masked men in the Glendara area of the city at around 10:30pm last night.

“At approximately 10.30pm last night it was reported that a 39 year old man answered a knock to his door and was confronted by two masked men,” a PSNI spokesman said.

“As he attempted to close the door three shots were fired at him, one of which struck him in the left thigh. He was taken to hospital for treatment. His injury is not believed to be life threatening. “

Condemning the incident Sinn Fein Councillor Patricia Logue said: “I call on the groups involved in these shootings to end this futility and leave the people of the area, along with the statutory agencies and the PSNI, to build on making the area a safer place for residents and bring about long-term, sustainable solutions to any problems.”

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information to contact Detectives in Strand Road on 0845 600 8000. Information can also be passed anonymously to the Independent Charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
