Managing special needs behaviour in Carn

Spraoi agus Sport’s Something Special group will host a session on Managing Behaviour for parents of children with special needs next week.

Starting on Monday May 14 from 4pm-6.30pm in Simpsons, Tul na Rí, Carndonagh, the session will be delivered by a psychological therapist.

The class is aimed at parents of children with special needs who are interested in finding out more about Managing Behaviour and will cover such things as understanding why certain behaviours are occurring, assessing problem behaviours including condition specific behaviours (e.g. Autism, ADHD) and working out strategies to manage them.

Something Special is a sub-committee of Spraoi agus Spórt, Carndonagh and is a special needs activity club run by parents for their children and siblings.

Cathy Kelly, one of the founding parents said: “We identified a need for some classes specifically designed for special needs children and Spraoi agus Spórt was such a good help in getting our group up and running. We have been going almost a year now and have run a variety of classes and talks for our children and siblings and their parents.

“This talk on Managing Behaviour has been organized in response to parents who are members of our group. We always welcome new members and anyone interested in getting involved or wants to find out about this talk or our summer timetable should contact Spraoi agus Spórt in Carndonagh.”

Helen Nolan, Chairperson of Spraoi agus Spórt added, “While all the activities in our family centre are fully inclusive of special needs, we do recognize that sometimes it is more appropriate to have specific sessions. Something Special is an important part of the Spraoi agus Spórt which was born out of two parents approaching us to start a group.”

She added: “Now the group is going from strength to strength and we will be publishing an exciting summer activity timetable shortly.” For further details, keep an eye on our website and In the meantime, those wishing to book a place for the session on Managing Behaviour should telephone or text Spraoi agus Spórt on 086 8420203.”
