Marie Curie in volunteer appeal

The Limavady branch of Friends of Marie Curie was formed in 1991 when local nurse, Siobhan Farquharson, formed a fundraising committee in the town and they began hosting social events in the local community.

Over the years the group has gone from strength to strength and has raised a staggering amount of money for the charity.

The funds raised by the group have enabled Marie Curie Cancer Care to provide high quality nursing to terminally ill patients, in the comfort of their own homes in the Roe Valley area.

Marie Curie Nurses are free of charge to patients and their carers – the work carried out by the charity is mainly funded through donations from the public and proceeds from fundraising events in the local community.

Local fundraiser Gavin McGucken said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of Roe Valley Friends of Marie Curie Cancer Care for their tireless support and hard work in 2010 and over the 20 years since the group was formed.

“The commitee put a lot of effort into the organising and running of their local events so that everything runs smoothly and everyone enjoys themselves.

“The group have raised a phenomenal amount of money over the years and this money has helped fund over 15,000 hours of nursing care.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone in the local community who has attended their events and given so generously”.

Roe Valley Friends of Marie Curie Cancer would also like to put out a plea for some new members who can bring in new fundraising ideas for 2011. The group meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 5.30pm to organise their upcoming schedule of events.

Lucille Brolly, Chairperson of the Group said “We would love to welcome some new members to the group, people who would be available to spare a few hours a month and who have new ideas to help us to raise money for such a worthwhile cause. If you interested in helping then please get in touch”
