Mark's boxing from Buncrana to Boston

An Inishowen man has been praised for his work with the Boston Boxing Academy and for bringing it to Donegal recently.

Mark Porter, who is originally from Buncrana and lives in Boston, accompanied the team to the county as they took part in a special tournament in Letterkenny’s Clanree Hotel hosted by the County Donegal Boxing Board.

Donegal Cathoirleach Ciaran Brogan said it was a “great pleasure” to welcome the team, adding that their visit “further strengthens and reinforces the hugh connections between Donegal and Boston.”

Colr. Ciaran Brogan paid tribute to Mr Porter and also praised the work of County Donegal Boxing Board President, Peter O’Donnell. “Peter has a special love for boxing, he works on a voluntary basis, his passion and those like Peter’s, are reshaping and changing people’s lives,” he said.

Colr Brogan pointed out how, “from its humble beginnings in the 1950s,” the County Donegal Boxing Board now has 17 clubs affiliated for 2015-2016. “reaching from Bundoran to Inishowen, with currently around 400 boxers.”

Mr Porter thanked Donegal County Council and the County Donegal Boxing Board in making the visit possible. He said: “I wish to thank everyone who helped in making our visit such a success, it has been a phenomenal experience, we all very proud to be here in Donegal and this visit has laid the ground for those coming after. We hope to welcome a Donegal team to Boston in the New Year.”
