Martin McGuinness '˜was there for all Republican families'

A Derry community activist have spoken of how Martin McGuinness never forgot the community he came from.

Frankie McMenamin said he wished to pass on his sympathies to Mr McGuinness’ family and said his death marked “a very sad day for the wider Republican family and all who knew him”.

Mr McMenamin said Mr McGuinness always made time for others despite his hectic schedule at the helm of government.

“When he was ill he still made it down to my mother Margaret McMenamin’s funeral and that is one thing about him, any Republican who died he made sure he paid his respects.

“He dedicated his whole life to the Republican cause and worked tirelessly to get a better society and a better island for people.

“He was a friend of our family, but he was there for all Republican families. If they were going through a bad time he was there to support them. He always made his way there to give them support.”

Mr McGuinness will be laid to rest following Requiem Mass at St Columba’s Long Tower Church at 2pm on Thursday.
