When Maureen Nolan comes to Derry next month with the hit musical ‘Footloose’ she hopes to explore the city as well as taking to the stage at the Millennium Forum.
Speaking from her home in Blackpool she admitted that in the past she performed in towns and cities without seeing outside their theatres.
She explained, “Now I’m older I take the time to explore the region I’m performing in. And we’re in Derry for a few days so I’m hoping I get to see more of it.”
But on stage, Maureen will be playing the part of Vi Moore.
“It’s not a huge role, but it’s one I’m enjoying. I sing a few ballads, one of which was composed especially for the stage show. A lot of the songs, like ‘Holding Out for a Hero’ and ‘Let’s Hear it for the Boy’ were in the original 80s movie and they are as catchy now as they were then, “It’s definitely a feel-good show, based on a real story about a town in America where the local Reverend banned dancing.
“The audience generally leave with a smile on their faces - and I love my job. Where else would you be paid to entertain and have people stand up applauding you every night?”
Joining the show in time for the Derry performances is Lee Brennan - one-third of the 90s boyband 911. Maureen says he’s “lovely, and a great addition”.
The show has been on tour for some time now and is not due to finish its run until October and Maureen admits she misses home.
“Being on tour for so long is not ideal, and I love being at home, just cleaning, cooking or whatever. But I do enjoy being on the road too and ‘Footloose’ has an especially lovely cast.”
Footloose the Musical performs at the Millennium Forum from Tuesday. 31st May until Sat 4th June. Tickets are available now from the Box Office. Telephone, (028)71 264455 or visit www.millenniumforum.co.uk for bookings.
