Sinn Fein MLA for Foyle, Raymond McCartney, has called on the Northern Ireland Prison Service to implement changes to prisoner care in Maghaberry prison immediately.
Mr. McCartney and his Sinn Fein colleagues have visited the prison in recent months.
The main issues prisoners want to see movement on include changes to visiting arrangements, strip searches, controlled movement and prisoners being held in isolation.
“Sinn Féin supports the call from the prisoners to implement changes in Maghaberry,” said Mr. McCartney.
“Such changes are long overdue and many form part of an agreement reached between prison authorities and the prisoners which are still outstanding.”
Mr. McCartney a former IRA prisoner humself, said if both parties were to secure a solution to the problem then the issues highlighted by the prisoners must be addressed.
“These issues must be resolved to ensure that all prisoners can be treated with dignity and respect.
“Sinn Féin will continue to place pressure on the Justice Department to see that these important changes are put into effect,” he said.
Mr. McCartney and fellow Sinn Fein MLA, Jennifer McCartney visited Maghaberry in August where they met with the Prisoner Ombudsman Tom McGonigle.
