McHugh: LUAS link Derry-Letterkenny

A LUAS rail line linking Derry and Letterkenny would have the potential to unlock massive employment and tourism potential of this region. And Deputy Joe McHugh says we should be attempting to make it happen.

Speaking with the Journal yesterday the Fine Gael TD said: “This summer’s fleadh proves that Derry has the power to rise all boats in this area.Derry is key. Donegal was bunged with Derry’s overflow. And can you imagine the potential if the Belfast-Derry line was extended into Letterkenny. All those people flying and sailing into Belfast could easily get to Derry opening up Inishowen, on to Letterkenny through to west Donegal. And this summer half of the north holidayed here. Just imagine the massive potential tourism increase if we could make market access to Donegal as easier, cheaper, and better.”

Expressing his support for the West Ulster Rail Initiative, which was launched yesterday at the Station House Hotel in Letterkenny Deputy McHugh said in the campaign to re-establish rail connectivity in the northwest region it made sense for Donegal, Derry, Monaghan, Tyrone, Cavan and Fermanagh to come together.

“The 2014 Euro elections are an important opportunity for progressing rail development in the northwest.

“I encourage the people to make rail connectivity an election issue. That is a way to get candidates to commit to the project.”
