Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin has welcomed changes to legislation to allow physiotherapists to independently prescribe certain medication without a doctor’s countersignature.
The chair of the Assembly’s health committee said: “Legislation allowing physiotherapists to independently prescribe medicines for their patients without a doctor’s signature is a welcome step and will give patients increased access to treatment.
“This has the potential to make a real difference to patients as it will speed up the prescription process.
“It will also help take some of the workload from GPs who are already under a great deal of pressure.
“We will monitor the outworking of this initiative as it is rolled out across the North.”
