'˜McLean had the game of his life while Duffy was simply immense'
Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, has praised Derry men James McClean and Shane Duffy for helping Ireland qualify for the next round of the European Championships in France.
Mr. McGuinness was at the game against Italy in the Stade Pierre Mauroy on Wednesday evening.
Ireland needed a win to progress to the next round and thanks to a 85th minute Robbie Brady goal they will play France in the next round in Lyon on Sunday.
The Sinn Fein MLA for Foyle met with some of the Ireland players, including Creggan born McClean, before the game.
“It was a fantastic occasion and an incredible performance from the players and the fans who created a tremendous atmosphere from start to finish.”
Mr. McGuinness also made sure to praise Ireland manager and former St. Columb’s College pupil, James McClean.
“The Derry lads in particular did us proud,” said Mr. McGuinness.
“James McLean had the game of his life while Shane Duffy was simply immense at the back. And of course, we have Martin O’Neill at the helm so I think Derry can rightly stake a claim to playing a huge part in this famous victory.”
