Thieves have stolen a stretch of the train line at Foyle Road close to the Foyle Valley Railway Museum.
30 feet of railway track was stolen during the incident, which was reported on Thursday afternoon.
It is the latest in a series of metal thefts in the city in recent weeks.
Commenting on the theft atthe Derry City Council-owned facility, a PSNI spokesperson said; “Police in Derry can confirm that they received reports of theft on the Letterkenny Road on the afternoon of Monday 15 August.
“At approximately 4pm it was reported that approximately 30ft of railway track had been stolen.
“Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Strand Road Police Station on 0845 600 8000. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
Craig McGuckian from Derry City Council said’ “The Council is aware that there have been some incidents of theft along the railway track and these incidents have been reported to the PSNI. It is very difficult to put a value or a cost on repairs. Relatively little has been taken at this point but our major concern is that if any more were taken it could potentially damage our plans for future use.”
