Dungiven man Michael Coyle has been well known for his trademark long silver tresses and for years he has been hounded by family and friends to get them cut.
Last Saturday, the SDLP councillor finally caved in, cutting his locks for charity; raising in excess of £1,000 for the Roe Valley Friends of Marie Curie.
Dad-of-two Michael had a poignant reason for the dramatic hair cut, and the local cancer charity was a natural choice for Michael as it is close to his heart.
Michael’s wife, Mary passed away eight years ago from cancer. He says Mary was a great supporter of Marie Curie and the family found excellent support and comfort from Marie Curie nurses during her illness.
“I think Mary would be proud of me for doing this, but she’d be saying first ‘get the hair cut’!” said Michael. “I’m very grateful for all the support Roe Valley Friends have given me. I’ve been involved with them for a while, so I’m delighted to give something back.”
Limavady Mayor Gerry Mullan said it was a great gesture and was among the first to tell Michael he looked 20 years younger with his new ‘do’.
