Sean McGrotty and his two sons, Mark and Evan, together with the boys’ grandmother, Ruth and aunt Jodie Lee, died on the evening of Sunday, March 20th when their vehicle slipped off the edge of Buncrana pier. Miraculously, Mark and Evan’s 14 month old baby sister, Rioghnach-Ann was rescued as the vehicle sank and plucked from the water to safety by bystander, Davitt Walsh. Mr Walsh later revealed how Sean McGrotty had handed his infant daughter to him saying: “Save the baby”.

The tragedy stunned the people of Derry and Buncrana and sympathy was expressed from across Ireland to Sean’s partner, Louise James who lost five members of her family and her extended family.
