Mother Teresa declared saint by Pope Francis

Mother Teresa has been declared a saint by Pope Francis at a ceremony in the Vatican.

The Bishop of Derry, Donal McKeown and local people attended the special event which took place in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday.

A brief biography of Mother Teresa’s work was read out by Cardinal Angelo Amato before he asked Pope Francis to declare Mother Teresa a saint.

“After due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define Blessed Teresa of Calcutta to be a saint and we enrol her among the saints, decreeing that she is to be venerated as such by the whole Church,” said Pope Francis.

Mother Teresa will be now known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta.
