Work is set to begin on a trial basis at creating several new taxi ranks in the city centre.
Provision of taxi spaces at Lower Clarendon Street, Tesco Strand Road, Police Court Street and Shipquay Street is being taken forward.
Mr. Pat Ramsey praised the announcement that work is to begin to increase taxi rank provision in the city centre for those drivers independent of any taxi office.
“Currently there are 28 city centre spaces for some 1100 registered drivers,” explained Pat Ramsey MLA for Foyle.
Having attended a briefing by the Department of Regional Development hosted by the North West Taxi Proprietors, Mr. Ramsey welcomed the news adding.
“Obviously we must support those working in this challenging industry as they make a large contribution to the economic and social development of the city centre.
“These drivers are self employed and any access to a larger footfall can only assist them in making a living.
“This issue has been ongoing for a number of years and I welcome any progress in terms of increasing provision.”
