Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC) has told the ‘Journal’ it is “confident” the re-development of Templemore Sports Complex will be completed by 2018.
The local leisure centre currently has a 25m swimming pool, a learner pool for children, a fitness suite, several multi use sports halls, a 400m athletics track, grass and all-weather football pitches.
Located on the Buncrana Road, Templemore Sports Complex was built in the 1970s and some of the facilities at the sports centre are not as state of the art as they once were.
A DCSDC spokesperson told the ‘Journal’ a number of development proposals have been put forward and a business case for the re-development of the centre was in the offing.
“The redevelopment of Templemore Sports Complex is a key capital development project which is a priority for 2016,” said the spokesperson.
“Following extensive consultation with both the public and local stakeholders, a number of development proposals have been prepared and a business case is now being finalised.”
The spokesperson added: “Council remains committed to developing the facility into a first class centre promoting both sporting excellence and health and well being which will attract visitors from across the city and beyond.
“ We remain confident that this goal can be achieved on schedule by 2018,” she concluded.
