Nice Terror Attack: '˜It has shocked the world' - McGuinness
Sinn Fein MLA for Foyle, Martin McGuinness, has described the moment an armed man drove a truck into a crowd of people in the French city of Nice as a 'horrific attack'.
So far, 84 people have died as a result of the attack, which took place during the Bastille Day celebrations on Thursday night.
Hundreds of people were injured in the attack; 18 of which are in a critical condition and 54 children were admitted to hospital.
“Thursday night’s attack in Nice has shocked the world,” said Mr. McGuinness.
“The fact that so many people died while out enjoying celebrations for a national holiday makes it all the more tragic.
“I am conscious of the fact that people from so many countries , including some of our own citizens and those from my own city were caught up in this horrific attack.
“The scale of the loss of life is heartbreaking and my thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of all those killed and injured.
“We must all stand together in the face of hate and intolerance and show solidarity with the people of France at this time.”
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Alderman Hilary McClintock expressed her heartfelt sympathies to the people of France following the terror attack.
“On behalf of the people of the city and district, I would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the people of France following the indiscriminate act of terror that was inflicted on the people of Nice who were out and about enjoying what should have been a day of celebration. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have been bereaved and all those who have been injured.
“I am also aware that there are many people from our own city and district who are holidaying in the area at this time and I sincerely hope that all the local families will soon have reassurance from their loved ones as to their safety. All of us in Northern Ireland are aware of the devastation of terrorism and the impact it has on communities and I utterly condemn this act of violence that has resulted in such carnage and devastation,” she said.
