Several hundred people braved the cool morning air to greet the dawning of the summer solstice at An Grianan this morning.

The event was part of the Earagail Arts Festival - and a tie in with Music City which will see Derry brought to life with the sound of music throughout the day.

Welcoming the dawn were the Inishowen Gateway Singers, lead by musical director John Peoples.

The choir thrilled the assembled crowd with beautiful renditions of Morning Has Broken, This is The Moment and a emotionally charged rendition of Danny Boy just as the sun’s rays finally broke over the top of the ancient Irish ring fort.

The dawn chorus was attended by the Mayor of Derry, Colr. Martin Reilly and also the Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.

A second event at Grianan - the spectacular Awakening the Horsemen - will be staged tonight.
