O'Kanes from Derry city and county and beyond, will meet tonight in the Beech Hill Hotel for the annual O'Cathain Clan Gathering.

Among them will be Danny O’Kane from Dungiven who says it’s a celebration of the Clan’s history and culture.

Tonight’s celebrations features a lecture from Gaelic Medieval historian, Lorna Maloney on Clan O’Catháin, a fearless, dominant clan in Ulster in the 1590s when the Chief of the clan controlled most of the present county of Derry.Lorna’s talk examines the three marriages of Donnell Ballagh and focuses not only on the political and diplomatic significance of the marriages but also on the fate of the three women and their children. His first wife was a sister of Red Hugh O’Donnell; his second third, his only marriage for love, was Honora O’Cahan.

As an introduction to the lecture there will be a brief account by Noel O’Kane of the life of Donnell Ballagh and his death in the Tower of London.

After the lecture tea and coffee will be provided, followed by traditional music: a special guest appearance by the talented Mary Dillon, and then music by Seamus O’Cathain and friends. The evening welcomes all O’Kanes and anyone interested in the talk and history of the O’Cathain Clan. The event, starts at 7.30 pm and entry is £10.
