Breithlá sona!(?)

Osclaíodh Stormont ar an 16 Samhain1932. Rinne Edward, an rídhamhna, an searmanas. Caithfidh tú admháil gur foirgneamh galánta atá ann. Tá sé suite in eastát ciúin 300 acra, i bhfad ó chroílár Bhéal Feirste, le radhairc dheasa thart timpeall. Tá mé cinnte go bhfuil éad ar mhuintir na hAlban. Tá suíomh 4 acra ag a bParlaimint agus tá sí suite díreach ar imeall na príomhchathrach plódaithe. Tá daonra 5.295 milliún ag Albain agus tá 1.811 milliún ina gcónaí i dTuaisceart Éireann. Tá 129 ball ag Parlaimint na hAlban agus tá 108 ball againne sa stáitín seo. Níl mé go maith ag Mata, ach sílim go bhfuil seasca ball le spáráil againne.

Tá 129 ball ag Parlaimint na hAlban agus tá 108 ball againne sa stáitín seo. Níl mé go maith ag Mata, ach sílim go bhfuil seasca ball le spáráil againne. Mar gheall ar an ghéarchéim eacnamaíochta, ba chóir dúinn ceant sclábhaithe a eagrú anseo agus na baill bhreise a dhíol. Bheadh muid ábalta an brabús a úsáid chun cúpla otharlann a shábháil, agus b’fhéidir le híoc as ceachtanna Gaeilge chun go mbeadh baill áirithe in ann cur lena gcúpla focal, nó le híoc as ceachtanna deabhéasa do bhall ar bith nach bhfuil meas aige ar an teanga a úsáideann cuid mhaith dá toghthóirí. Agus bheadh sábháil airgid ann gan amhras nuair a smaoiníonn tú ar na tuarastail, ar na turais thar lear, ar thurais sa bhaile, ar na dinnéir srl. srl.

Tá seomra díospóireachta breá i Stormont, cé nach bhfuil na díospóireachtaí thar mholadh beirte. Shílfeá go mbeadh na baill thar a bheith sásta an lá ar fad a chaitheamh i seomra compordach mar sin ach uaireanta ní bhíonn ach scór nó níos lú i láthair ag na díospóireachtaí. Dá mbeadh siad ina ndaltaí scoile bheadh an t-oifigeach tinrimh ag tabhairt cuairte ar a dtuismitheoirí agus bheadh siad os comhair na cúirte.

Mar a dúirt mé, d’oscail Edward an Pharlaimint. Cúig bliana ina dhiaidh sin thug sé a óráid dheireanach mar Rí agus thug sé suas an choróin. B’fhéidir go gcinnfidh Rialtas na Breataine fáil réidh ar an dóigh chéanna de Stormont, foras a chailleann na milliúin punt ag an am seo de chúlú eacnamaíochta.

Happy Birthday(?)

Stormont was opened on 16 November 1932. The heir to the throne, Edward, performed the ceremony. You must admit that it is a splendid building. It is located in a quiet 300 acre estate, far from the centre of Belfast, with lovely views all around. I am sure that the people of Scotland are jealous. Their Parliament is on a 4 acre site and it is situated right on the edge of the busy capital. Scotland has a population of 5.295 million and 1.811 million people live in Northern Ireland. The Scottish Parliament has 129 members and we have 108 members in this little State. I am not very good at Maths, but I calculate we have sixty surplus members. In the light of the economic crisis, we ought to organise a slave auction and sell off the extra members. We could use the profits to save a couple of hospitals, and perhaps to pay for Irish lessons to help some members to add to their ‘couple of words’, or to pay for lessons in manners for any member showing lack of respect for the language used by many of his constituents. And there would definitely be a saving when you think of the salaries, of the trips abroad, of the trips at home, of the dinners etc. etc.

Stormont has a fine Debating Chamber, although the debates are of an abysmally low standard. You would think that the members would be only too pleased to spend the whole day in a comfortable room like that, but sometimes there are only twenty or fewer present at the debates. If they were school pupils, the attendance officer would be visiting their parents and would have them up before the court.

As I have said, Edward opened the Parliament. Five years later he made his last speech as king, and gave up the crown. Perhaps the British government will decide in a similar fashion to get rid of Stormont, an institution which is losing millions of at a time of economic recession.
