The on/off saga of boxing legends Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao looks as if it could be back on again (make that again and again and again)! Currently ranked first and third respectively in RING Magazine’s ranking of the best ‘pound for pound’ fighters in the world, it’s the fight every boxing fan wants to see.
However, for whatever reason, both men up until now have avoided a fight that could rightly be labelled ‘The Fight of the Century’.
And promoters for several years have failed to put the fight together but now both boxers are calling for the match to be made.
Mayweather, who is close to his 38th birthday, is undefeated as a professional boxer and has won 10 world titles ranging in weights from super-featherweight to middleweight. In addition to that, he has knocked out over half of his opponents in his 47 contests to date.
I watched both of Mayweather’s fights with highly rated Argentinean, Marcus Rene Maidana, last year and he was hugely impressive in both victories.
Strangely enough Pacquiao, who is one year younger than Mayweather, also holds 10 world titles but he has been beaten twice in his 57 contests to date.
So-called informed sources have stated that June 2015 is the date for the ‘big fight’ but we have been round the block a few times with these two, so it’s very much a case of wait and see.
