The usual call from Madrid was even more interesting this time out as my sister, Marianne was recounting a piece of family excitement this week.
My nephew Desmond, the older of the two Poggio boys, is, by all accounts, a pretty useful golfer and was out on the Encin Golf Course in Alcala de Henares outside Madrid with his pal Ignatio who, according to Desmond, is even better.
The two lads were making their way round and our lad was playing an approach shot to the green. He chipped it perfectly and it ended up as a ‘gimme’, just a few inches from the pin. Feeling pretty pleased with himself he made his way towards the green where he found a fellow golfer waiting for him. ‘That was a great shot’, says his new friend; much to Des’s delight. It’s always nice to be complemented on one’s sporting efforts at any level, but, when the compliment comes from the lips of the legendary Luis Figo – for it was indeed the great man himself – things don’t get much sweeter. Naturally the two boys asked the former Real Madrid winger if he’d pose for a photograph with them; and he was gracious enough to oblige. That’s one round of golf it will take a while to forget!
