The PSNI has confirmed it received over 100 reports of alleged sex assaults at care homes, nursing homes or retirement complexes between 2013 and 2015.
There were eight reported rapes, 80 sexual assaults, and 13 other sexual offences reported from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2016.
Releasing the information in response to a Freedom of Information request, the PSNI said: “The response above is based on crimes which have been classified as sexual offences and have been reported to police from January 2013 to December 2015 where the location is ‘Dwelling’ and where the ‘location subtype’ is ‘care establishment other’, ‘Retirement complex’ or ‘Nursing home’.”
The PSNI explained that the dwellings listed as ‘care establishment other’, may not be “exclusively dedicated to older people and that due to the manner in which the information is recorded on the PSNI system it is possible that these offences may have occurred outside or within the vicinity of the care/nursing home or retirement complex, e.g. in the car park etc.”
