For the last forty years, the history of the Fountain and Bishop Street areas has been dominated by the existence of the peacewall and the issues surrounding it.
Now, in a major new project funded by OFMDFM, the Housing Executive and the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin, the Bogside based Gasyard Development Trust will be working with local residents of both sides of the wall to develop joint heritage and tourism initiatives.
“I am delighted that the project is now able to begin,” said Project Manager Mickey Cooper.
“It is a culmination of several years engagement between ourselves at the Gasyard, the staff of the Peacewalls project and the residents of the Fountain and lower Bishop Street areas to identify common themes where co-operation was possible to develop initiatives and relationships between the two areas.”
The project will include a new booklet on the shared history of both areas, a number of orientation signs which will direct tourists to the main attractions and activities in both areas, and a new website and literature promoting all the local businesses in both areas.
