Pensioner’s home targeted in Derry arson attack


A 70-year old woman has escaped injury after an arson attack on her home in Derry’s Waterside.

The PSNI said a flammable liquid had been poured through the letterbox of a house at Cameilia Court and set on fire. The incident was reported shortly before 6pm last night (April 20)

The woman was able to extinguish the flames which caused scorch damage to the door.

Police , who attended the scene came under attack from a group of youths.

Sergeant Joe George said: “While in attendance, youths threw a number of missiles at police. The rear windscreen of a police vehicle was smashed as a result.”

He continued: “A motive for this incident has yet to be established and I would appeal to any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact Police at Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101. Information can also be passed anonymously via the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.”

Sinn Féin Councillor Christopher Jackson condemned the incidents.

“This must have been a very frightening experience for this resident.

“The police have to be allowed to carry out their work in responding to emergency situations.”

He called on local parents to know “what their children are getting involved in here.“
