Pensioners urged to apply for new boilers’ scheme

Derry’s most needy pensioners are to benefit from a multimillion pound boiler replacement scheme, SDLP MLA Pól Callaghan has said.

Welcoming an announcement that £127 million is to be spent tackling fuel poverty in the North in the next four years, Mr Callaghan urged local pensioners to apply for the scheme. The scheme will be open to State pensioners over 60, with boilers over 15 years old. Mr Callaghan said: “Social Development Minister Alex Attwood’s decision to prioritise this area - in a time of budget cutbacks - means that many pensioners in the Derry area will quality for new boilers as part of an initial pilot scheme.”
