A fundraiser has been launched to pay the vet bills of a little dog who was found at the Eddie Fullerton Dam in the Illies in Inishowen.

The dog, who has been named Benson, was found on Friday, July 28 at the dam, outside Buncrana. He did not have a microchip and his owner has yet to come forward, despite a social media campaign.

Benson was kindly taken in by Jodie Harkin and her family, who already have three rescue dogs – a chihuahua called Finn, a Pomeranian called Presley and an American Bulldog called Rico.

They noticed various issues with Benson and took him to the vet on Monday, July 1.

The vet deemed Benson to be over 10 years old and in poor condition. He has cataracts in both eyes, an ear infection, a urine infection, worms, multiple broken teeth and gum issues, as well as signs of prostate cancer.

Heartbreakingly and shockingly, the vet believed that a black burn seen on Benson’s back is the result of having boiling hot oil poured on to him.

Jodie said that it is believed that Benson had been ‘living rough’ for a very long time.

Although they did not initially intend to keep him, they now want to give Benson love and comfort for the rest of his days.

Jodie said: “He has taken our hearts and made himself at home with us.”He is due to return to the vet on Wednesday, July 3 for various procedures and to hopefully remove any possible cancer. He will also be microchipped, licensed and registered to the Harkins, although they will have to see if someone comes forward to claim ownership within 28 days. A Go Fund Me fundraiser has been set up to pay Benson’s vet bills. Any extra funds will be donated to charity. Jodie said: “It’s so sad that he’s had an awful life so far; but he’s fought this long, let’s give him a chance to be healthy and happy with a safe home for the rest of his little life.”
