Derry City and Strabane District Council is to appoint a consultant team to review the Remediation Strategy for the Mobuoy landfill site, while a report on the types of waste dumped there is expected to be published soon.

An estimated 1.6 tonnes of waste was illegally dumped at the the 46-hectare site, located on the outskirts of Derry City.

At an Environment and Regeneration Committee meeting on Wednesday, Head of Environment, Conor Canning, said activities were undertaken by Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) to “identify the types, quantity and impacts of the wastes buried” at the illegal dump, and results would soon be issued for public consultation.

Mr Canning said: “The council subsequently resolved to tender and procure a suitably qualified consultant team to undertake the review and prepare a report for consideration by council, and this will in turn inform the response provided by council to the consultation.

“One tender was returned by the closing date of April 12, and an evaluation panel agreed to recommend the award of tender to AECOM Ltd in the sum of £53,810.

“No budgets are earmarked for these exceptional types of costs and consultancy fees as part of the rates estimates process, so this will represent an unbudgeted financial pressure.

“The Lead Finance Officer will endeavour to identify funds for this as part of the 2023/24 year-end outturn report.”

An officers’ recommendation to award the tender for the review to AECOM Ltd was endorsed by elected members.
