The 72-year-old, fondly known as ‘Mr Clonmany Festival,’ was remembered as an extraordinary man, who made a phenomenal contribution to the peninsula.

Not only was Mr Boyce instrumental in running the Clonmany Festival, which put the village and peninsula ‘on the map,’ he was also a gold medallist at the World Transplant Games.

One of Donegal’s longest living transplant recipients, he highlighted the importance of organ donation and was also remembered for his involvement with North West Community Radio (NWCR).

A strong supporter of local charities and causes, his contribution - along with that of his wife, Lucy - to crafting the Inishowen we know today is somewhat unrivalled.

When contacted by the Journal, Cathal Doherty, on behalf of the Clonmany Festival Committee, said Hugo was an ‘inspiration.’

‘He was extraordinarily forward thinking and always up for a new challenge. For his never ending commitment to Clonmany and the festival, the community will forever be in his debt. Hugo was an extraordinary man, who will be greatly missed by all in the Clonmany Festival family. He is irreplaceable and was an inspiration to us all. The festival committee’s deepest sympathies go to his wife, Lucy and all his family.”

Mr Boyce was instrumental in giving many musicians their ‘big break’ at the festival, one of whom was country music star Nathan Carter. The singer paid tribute to him yesterday. “Hugo gave me one of my first ever festival gigs in Ireland at the famous Clonmany Festival & was a huge part of the festival since the start. RIP Hugo.”

Inishowen Cathaoirleach Albert Doherty said Mr Boyce’s contribution to the local community will forever be admired. “His development and establishment of the local festival was admirable. Rest in peace, Hugo and thank you.”
