Indie, punk, chaotic, melodic, angry are just some of the words that can be used to describe Derry band Tramp as they are set to release their debut EP, ‘BIMBOICATION.’

Tramp comprises four members – lead singer Siânna Lafferty, bassist Ellie McFadden, lead guitarist Fionnbarr Doran and the drummer Ciaran McCay, who is nicknamed 'Steamy.'

We chatted with the lead vocalist, Siânna, to get some insight into the band and the new EP.

Siânna described the band to someone who might not know who they are.

“Probably like an indie punk band, a punk attitude where there is nice soft indie music as well.

“A bit of shouting, a bit of melodic music, a bit of everything.”

Tramp’s beginnings started during the pandemic, Siânna said.

"We’ve been going since lockdown, which was very tragic for a lot of bands but it meant we had no pressure to be good, fast. We had time to work away.”

Since their humble lockdown beginnings, the band has had multiple radio plays and their track ‘Snakes and Rabbits’ featured in the BBC TV show Blue Lights.

Now, the band is set to launch their debut EP, ‘BIMBOFICATION.’

“The whole EP is about different aspects of misogyny, coming from my point of view, with writing the lyrics, that is what the stories are about,” said Siânna.

Explaining what the concept of ‘Bimbofication’ means to Tramp, Siânna said: “The bimbofication is about the conditioning on how we view femininity and how diet culture perpetuates keeping women small. Making you fight yourself.

“You are not going to start a revolution when you are fighting yourself and keeping yourself small.”

Siânna continued: “It's fun, throwing gender roles out the window or bringing them to light and playing with it. A way of expressing the absolute anger of how we view ourselves and each other. ‘Bimbofication’ seemed like a word to describe the EP, us and our music.”

The message Tramp tries to get out there is what drives the band.

“It's one of my big drives. I say we make music for fun. We do. But it's a way to process things. My rage and anger at the world. Music is how I process that. To get it out there as well,” said Siânna.

The lead singer explained that when they were younger, they connected their anger with the world with their music.

"Which is a good bit of Tramp. The need for justice and music is the heart of the band,” said Siânna.

A track on the EP that is very important to Siânna is titled ‘Free, Safe, Legal’. They said: “If you have been around Ireland and the North, you will know what it is about. Reproductive rights, health care and what happened when we were trying to fight for healthcare. It's going to be one people will either love or hate.”

Another track is ‘Skeletons’.

“It’s kind of like the odd one out but it's meant to be there,” said Siânna, “It's about trauma, resurfacing trauma and not understanding it.”

BIMBOFICATION calls on the metal band System of a Down for inspiration, particularly the lyrics from Serj Tankian. Siânna said to expect this EP to be heavier than their previous tracks.

Tramp credited Rocky Riley with the production of BIMBOFICATION. Siânna said he made a track sound like ‘complete warfare’.

Nerves can go into releasing a first EP, although Tramp is happy with what they have. “I'm happy with it,” said Siânna. “It has five tracks, which are so individual, you probably put different genres to each song. They are all a good reflection of us.

"They all sound like Tramp. It feels like a solid portfolio. I could not be happier.”

Tramp have often been described as a chaotic band when they are on stage. The group uses their rage and emotions to give their audience a good show, even if the audience is seated in a theatre.

“We couldn't be more human when we are playing live. If someone is angry that day they show it. Our connection is something I love,” said Siânna.

Outside of the music, each band member has their role to keep things running smoothly. Siânna explained what each member brings to the table. Fionnbarr is the driver, ‘Steamy’ focuses on the music, Ellie has a law degree so she looks after the band legally and Siânna takes care of the social media, emails and admin.

Siânna said: “I think we all bring completely different aspects to the band. The same with song writing too. I don't think any of our songs have been written the same way.”

What is important to Siânna is that the band are friends first before the music. They said: “Being in a band creates so much tension you won't be honest with each other. A lot of bands will say it feels like a marriage.

“We have a good relationship with each other. If someone is going through a tough day, we will talk about it or if they don't want to, we will watch The Simpsons together. Friendship comes first.

“Looking to the future, Tramp hope to get out into the world, play at different venues across the globe and meet all sorts of new people.”
