Sinn Féin councillor Tony Hassan has welcomed the announcement of over 300 new social homes in the Skeoge lands for allocation next year.
It is understood the homes are to be built by Alex Housing and Fold Housing Associations over the course of the coming year.
Colr Hassan, who is also housing spokesperson for Sinn Fein, said : “This is a good news story for social housing provision in Derry and for the hundreds of people on the waiting list.
“The number of people waiting for a home in the city has increased dramatically over the past few years.
“These new homes will go some way to alleviating that problem.”
Mr Hassan said he would continue to lobby at every opportunity to ensure that the need for new social housing schemes is kept firmly on the agenda.
“I would also appeal to residents in different areas of the city where social homes developments are taking place to work with the Housing Associations to ensure that there is a positive outcome for everyone involved,” he added.
Outline planning permission for a total of 1,600 new homes along the Skeoge lands behind Galliagh was granted earlier this year.
