‘Consult with staff and tenants says Hassan

Staff and tenants of the Housing Executive need to be consulted on the future of the organisation, a local councillor has said.

Sinn Féin colr. Tony Hassan made the call amid concerns that the Housing Executive could be abolished.

The colr. tabled a motion in support of the Housing Executive at the last monthly meeting of Derry City Council.

“The 40th Anniversary of the Housing Executive has passed and there is a perception out there in the community that there are people in high places hell bent in running the Housing Executive down.

“It’s important to remember in the last year of the old Derry Corporation a total of 14 houses were built, and 40 years later in the city the homeless list is over 3,000 people,” he said.

Colr. Hassan said a wide consultation on the future of the Housing Executive is required. “DSD are not fully consulting with the staff of the Housing Executive. Not only should it be consulting with staff but also the 90,000 tenants to see how they feel on the running down of this housing body,” he said.
