Shantallow woman Sandra Duffy has been selected by Sinn Féin in Derry to contest the Ballyarnett electoral ward in the forthcoming local government elections.

Ms Duffy is well known in housing circles, is on the board of governors of St Columb’s College and Citizens Advice Bureau and has strong family links with amateur boxing in Derry.

She has worked in the field of housing and homelessness for 15 years and heads up a service within First Housing helping to prevent homelessness among young people in the area.

Speaking to Journal about her decision to run for Derry City Council she said; “There are not enough women in local politics so I was very pleased to have been selected by the party in Shantallow and then ratified by the party centrally to run for Derry City Council.

“It can be hard being a working mother and at the same time devoting a lot of time and energy to helping people in the constituency but it means you know exactly what is going on out there and the reality on the ground.

“The people I meet on a daily basis are worried about keeping a roof over their heads, holding down a job or trying to work their way through the benefits system.

“Times are tough and I believe that’s where the experience I have built up over the years working in the community is crucial in giving a voice to the marginalised,” she said.
