Two months ahead of appointment, Sinn Féin has in Limavady have revealed Councillor Cathal McLaughlin will succeed Sean McGlinchey as mayor of the borough.

Colr. McLaughlin will take up the appointment in early June.
“It’s a great honour for my family and myself. Sean McGlinchey has been an inspirational mayor and will be a hard act to follow,” said Colr. McLaughlin.
“My local cumann, Gleann na Rua are well advanced in preparing next year’s plan of work with me. A key priority will be to maintain the ‘Mayor’s Jobs Forum’ project which Sean initiated. There are so many exciting tourism events happening in the North West next year we need to ensure that Limavady Borough Council is geared up to maximise the benefit in terms of jobs and revenue for the local economy.”
Colr. Mclaughlin said his “Mayor’s Charity Fund” for the incoming year will support Multiple Sclerosis charities
.“Membership of my local cumann, Gleann na Rua has never been stronger.” he said “It now covers the entire Bellarena ward from Magilligan, Aghanloo, Bovally, Glack, Ballykelly and Greysteel and I will be relying heavily on their support throughout the coming year.”
Chairperson of Cumann Gleann na Rua, Paddy Butcher said: “On behalf of the local Sinn Fein cumann I offer Cathal our heartfelt congratulations on his nomination. It’s a credit to the sense of duty, the work rate and the dedication he has brought to Council since the local election last year. He will be a very popular choice, particularly here in the local parish. We have never had a Mayor playing football for St Aidan’s GAC in Magilligan before.”
Mr Butcher concluded: “Since first running a Sinn Féin candidate in Magilligan at the 2001 Election we have consistently built upon our local vote and Cathal is now the third Sinn Féin councillor in succession to hold the seat. I regard Cathal’s appointment as a reward for the support base we have established in Magilligan over the last 11 years. He brings youth and energy and will be a credit to all the people of Limavady Borough.”
